This was a huge oversight on Slates part but I think it’s close enough to work with now.īoth the Klanghelm VUMT and the Slate Trimmer in the picture above are calibrated to -20db and have the same 1khz test tone running through them but look close and you’ll see a slightly different reading from both. It was hidden! Clicking the screw directly under the meter allows you to calibrate your meters more accurately, but even in doing this I get about a 1db difference in metering with the slate trimmer tool and my trusty Klanghelm VUMT meter. In fact there was no documentation on changing the calibration at all. Slate originally felt it necessary to set the default calibration to something like -15 RMS! This would have been fine if it were adjustable, but there was no way to change RMS metering to peak metering. Another very annoying property is the calibration which I just recently learned has also been fixed in the most recent update.

This has since been addressed and it seemingly took months to release a trim knob, but there is now a free trim module availble for VMR. Initially there was no trim knob! that meant that in order to properly gain stage you had to use a plugin before VMR, thereby hampering the proposed workflow by needing to go outside of the plugin. I’ll start here by speaking my annoyance with this setup. You can get up to 8 modules in one instance, and even when the rack is maxed out, there is still a pretty minimal CPU load, though oddly enough I have seen the Hard Drive meter max directly after pressing stop on a session, which is odd to see that on a Solid State Drive, it has not translated into any real world problems. You drag a module from the left of the GUI to the right, where it then becomes active. Operation is fairly straight forward and intuitive. As I write this now there are actually 8 different modules that operate directly inside of VMR.

So… What Steven Slate has done with VMR is create 5 new plugins that work inside of a 500 series rack. Honestly, I’ll probably end up doing a review of all of his plug-ins for better or worse. In fact, the majority of the plugins Slate has released I’ve gotten quite a bit of usage out of for a fairly minimal investment, and the Virtual Mix Rack (aka. I’ve been using that for over 5 years so I’d say I’m getting my moneys worth out of it. I’ve been a fan of the Steven Slate products since I bought his drum sample library for Kontakt, and got the corresponding Drumagog samples for about 150$ back in early 2010.
